The Muse’s Escape
Come and escape with me... far away...
The Muse’s Escape 🌿
Even as the week presses in with its worries, and the days grow colder and shorter, there are moments that still invite a moment of pause.
In the shifting light and crisp air, the world seems to slow, allowing us to wander, memories to surface, and daydreams to stretch their wings. These are the small openings where imagination lingers, carrying you to places you’ve never seen but somehow know.
In this week’s Hidden corners of the world, we’ll explore a place where myth still lingers; in A Painting and a Poem, art and verse speak across time; and in Quote of the Week, a line worth carrying with you. To make this weekend even more inviting, I’ve added a warm drink recipe, a companion as you unravel The Muse Quiz. Each is a spark, a small passage to a world beyond the everyday.
So take a moment, let yourself drift, and allow these little journeys to find you. Sometimes, the smallest openings lead to the widest horizons.
We’re glad you’re here. :)

HIDDEN CORNERS OF THE WORLD
Hermitage of Montesiepi, Montesiepi Hill, near Chiusdino, Siena, Tuscany, Italy.
One of the most enchanting tales in European lore is the story of King Arthur and the sword in the stone, where only the rightful sovereign could draw the blade and reveal his destiny. Yet few realize that deep in Tuscany lies an older legend with striking similarities. In the hills near Siena, the figure of San Galgano left behind a sword embedded in rock—an enduring mystery that some historians believe may even have inspired the Arthurian myth itself.
Galgano Guidotti, born in 1148 in the small town of Chiusdino, was far from saintly in his youth. Of noble lineage and trained for battle, he lived a life steeped in vanity, violence, and indulgence. But his path shifted dramatically, transforming him from a proud knight into a revered hermit. His conversion was so remarkable that within only a few years of his death, in 1185, he became the first person formally canonized by the Catholic Church, leaving behind both documentation of his life and the enduring symbol of his sword in stone.
According to tradition, Galgano’s turning point came through a vision of the Archangel Michael. The archangel urged him to abandon his old ways and guided him toward Montesiepi, a hill near his hometown. The vision struck him so deeply that Galgano renounced his former life and declared his intention to live as a hermit. To the disbelief of his family and companions, he left behind worldly comforts and wealth in pursuit of spiritual truth.
On his way to bid farewell to his betrothed, fate intervened. Thrown from his horse, Galgano felt not pain but a profound serenity. A heavenly voice directed him to the summit of Montesiepi, where he saw a vision of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the Apostles within a radiant temple. When the vision faded, he heard a divine command to renounce earthly pleasures. Galgano hesitated, insisting such a sacrifice would be as impossible as cutting through stone. To prove his point, he thrust his sword into the rock. Miraculously, the blade slid in with ease, a sign that sealed his transformation forever.
From then on, Galgano lived in solitude on Montesiepi, devoting himself to prayer and reflection. After his death, a circular Romanesque chapel was built on the very site of his vision. Within its walls rests the sword in the stone, still preserved today as a relic that draws pilgrims and visitors from around the world. To stand before it is to encounter a piece of medieval faith that has survived centuries of skepticism and wonder.
For centuries, doubts surrounded the authenticity of the sword. Many dismissed it as a clever medieval invention meant to attract pilgrims. But modern analysis by scientists at the University of Pavia revealed that the weapon’s metal composition dates back to the 12th century, the very time of San Galgano himself. Ground-penetrating studies even uncovered a hidden cavity beneath the rock, believed to be a possible tomb, adding still more weight to the legend. Inside the chapel, another relic deepens the sense of mystery: a pair of mummified hands, said to have belonged to an assassin who attempted to kill the saint but was torn apart by wolves, protectors of Galgano. Carbon dating confirmed the remains also originate from the 12th century.
The legacy of San Galgano is more than a miracle frozen in stone, it is a story of redemption and transformation. From an arrogant knight to a humble hermit, his life reminds us that faith can alter even the hardest of hearts. His sword still pierces the rock on Montesiepi, not just as a relic of the past but as a symbol of the enduring power of vision, sacrifice, and change.
A PAINTING AND A POEM
“Hope” is the thing with feathers - by Emily Dickinson
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
…
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -
…
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"𝑇ℎ𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑑𝑜𝑛'𝑡 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑖𝑐 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑛𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑡." — Roald Dahl
Magic is not just in fairy tales—it’s in the way life unfolds when we dare to believe in possibility.
It is in the quiet moments of wonder, in the unexpected joys, and the world reveals its beauty to those who are open to seeing it.
𝑇𝑜 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑖𝑐 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑦 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦, but to recognize that reality is far richer and mysterious than we often allow ourselves to admit.
Dahl’s words remind us that our mindset shapes our experience.
If we expect only the ordinary, that is all we will find. But if we look for magic—in kindness, in connection, in the simple miracles of daily life—it has a way of appearing. The choice is always ours: to live with dull certainty or to embrace the unknown with a sense of wonder.
